Remember back in the 2010s where we had our childhood boybands like One direction, Big Time Rush, The Jonas Brothers. Well, I realized we simply don’t have boy bands anymore – none that are popular or making charts that young girls are crazy for. What we do have is girl groups. There has been such a rise of girl groups in the music industry right now. We have Katseye, Say Now, and now Girlset. Let me tell you, I am so here for it. Their music is on constant repeat on my spotify account.
What is really helping these groups grow is that they’re all dancers too. Especially with how useful TikTok is to musicians and artists. Having a trendy dance on TikTok absolutely helps keep their music stay relevant and consistently played. Along with this, the dance and their synchronization is so visually appealing. With their ability to be in-sync and their relationships on cameras during interviews, livestreams, etc. they have highlighted the idea of sharing the spotlight in a positive way.
I especially love this era of girl groups because it battles the idea that women are meant to pit against each other. If you are going to know anything about me, it is that I love my friendships with all of my girlfriends. So, to see the importance of having female friendships become so encouraged and showcased is exactly what I need to see.
I don’t remember seeing strong, healthy friendships between women when I was growing up. I remember the news on pop culture being all about whichever two women celebrities were fighting whether it was fake news or reliable, even with the girl groups we grew up like Fifth Harmony and Little Mix. It is lovely that this younger generation gets to look up to these newer groups’ relationships as role models.
I hope this trend continues because I am so here for the rise of women in this industry. With more than just girl groups but solo artists too. I love our double/triple threat artists like Tate McRae, Sabrina Carpenter, and Olivia Rodrigo. Pop music is so fun and girly nowadays and the girl nights have never been better!
