Your Guide to Surviving Winter Break Without Losing Your Mind

Can I just complain for a second? This might be a hot take but I do not like having a month off of school in the dead of winter. The holidays are fun until everyone goes back to their routines and college students are still twiddling our thumbs to get back into our routine too. I do love the comfort of my home and seeing my friends, but a month is such an awkward amount of time to be living in a space you grew out of. Okay now that I got that out of the way, lets get into the actual intention for this post; productivity over break. Having a whole month is a luxury and I have been trying to use it in a way that will set me up for success. Here is what I have been up to over break:

I have always given the excuse “I can’t read during the semester”. I am slowly breaking away from that pathetic excuse but now that I am home. I really don’t have any excuse not to pick up a book. One of my goals this year is to read a book a month. Currently I am diving into the memoir ‘Finding My Way’ by Malala Yousafzai. I just started it so I cant recommend anything right now but I can say that Malala has lived many lives.

After my first semester I decided to start a scrapbook of all of my adventures in college. I did this because I wanted to stay busy and a way to keep something physical for me to look back on. I don’t like to get crazy fancy with my scrapbook. I keep all the small things from the semester like scraps, flyers or receipts to add in. The only thing I need to continuously buy is the photos and tape to add in. It will be interesting to see what a cup of coffee will cost me in 10 years!

If you are all caught up from my post ‘new year, new intentions’ then you will know that I am taking on crocheting. Let me just say its my new favorite activity. I am not good with the counting so sometimes my pieces come out uneven but trust I am working on it. Currently I have made a hat and a scarf. I have a full pinterest board and my head is flooding with ideas on what my next project is. It also makes me exited to have downtime and focus on something while watching a show or listening to music.

Some other ideas for new skills could be cooking, drawing, organizing (digital and physical spaces), yoga, thrifting, and so much more. You just have to be willing to get out of your comfort zone and what better time to do it than now.

Now is a great time to get yourself ahead of the semester and start applying to opportunities. I know I hate doing this during the semester because I usually push it off until I can’t and then I feel like I didn’t put my best foot forward. With all this extra time, treat yourself to a cute coffee shop and lock in on the job search. Taking a look will not hurt you, it will keep your eyes open for what is out there waiting for you!

I am trying my absolute best to not waste this time that I have. Although it’s not my favorite time to be at home that doesn’t take away from the fact I can change my mindset about it. I hope everyone is catching up on their favorite hobbies and having a restful break!
