It’s been almost 6 months since glossed over was born on the internet! Even though we don’t get paid and we haven’t had our “we made it” post yet, all the small rewards feel so big. I personally have grown so much through managing a website to getting comfortable sharing my writing. Today I am going to share the biggest lessons that I have learned since becoming a blogger thus far:
If you can dream it, you can do it:
My ultimate dream is to become a travel journalist. I want to explore the world and be able to share it in writing. I know that dream is not something I can achieve overnight but with this blog I am taking a baby step. When Krys and I first started discussing the idea of a blog, my mind immediately went to the opportunity I would get to share my writing. This blog has not only added to my resume, but gave me a chance to dip my toes in the water with collaboration, deadlines, editing, etc.
Writers block:
Having to come up with content each week has allowed me to experience writer’s block for the first time. Not feeling motivated or that I have anything to write about is hard when I have commitments to uphold like my college work. I would love to dive into this deeper and search for ways to help writers with this issue because it is a common experience in the writing world. (Stay tuned)
I can’t imagine doing this alone:
I honestly think that a blog was a perfect place to start for me but I definitely could not do this without a partner, especially someone I have trusted and known for many years. We hold weekly meetings to bounce ideas off of each other and check in with one another. Having someone to hold me accountable and vice versa has made this blog so worth it for me. It’s fun to celebrate the small wins together in life and with the blog which has definitely grown our relationship closer.
It’s not as time consuming as you would think:
Okay so this one definitely depends on your goals, but for where I am in life, managing a blog has not totally consumed me. I look forward to sitting in front of my computer for an hour or two a week to plan and write. This type of work is what I want to take into my big girl job. Though creating content is not my favorite thing to do, it does not take that much time to film a video or take a picture. Prioritizing and giving myself the space to write about things that I am doing or what has been important in my life recently has translated into how I treat myself and others. Basically, I am held accountable to practice what I preach and I love it!
If you are thinking about creating a blog or taking a step to put your work out there, know that baby steps are okay and you don’t need to consume yourself right away. Make it exist and then you can learn to perfect it along the way. The power is in your hands.
