Building a new wardrobe can be hard – but it doesn’t have to be.
Have you ever bought an item of clothing that you loved so much and swore you would wear all the time only to wear it once? Me too. My closet was once full of impulse buys, trend chasing, and stuff that just didn’t fit right. Buying whatever catches your eye, as fun as it may be, doesn’t lead anywhere but an overflowing closet and you only using half of what’s in it. So, here are five tips to efficiently shop for your next wardrobe renovation:
- Pick a Palette that Loves You Back
Having a color palette can be so helpful in curating a variety of outfits. This allows you to mix and match frequently. We don’t hate outfit repeating over here, but we also acknowledge that building new outfits is part of the fun.
My advice to you is as simple as asking yourself, “what colors do I love to be seen in” – there’s your color palette. Here’s mine:
- TRY ON EVERYTHING (No, seriously)
I have a bad habit, especially when I thrift, of buying whatever catches my eyes and being too lazy to try it on. Then I get home and I don’t like how it fits or how the colors make me look.
Forcing yourself to try on everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, encourages you to only buy what you truly like on your body and not just the things you think are cute. Don’t be fooled by how it looks on the mannequin, it is always a lie.
- Quality OVER Quantity
I know what it’s like to have a tight-budget and a low bank account– I’m a college student. But I’m here to remind you that you get nothing out of buying from extreme fast-fashion stores. Yes, although a tank top from Free People can be over twenty bucks, the quality will always be more reliable than a tank top from Shein where your straps are always falling off your shoulders.
Don’t feel pressured to buy clothes from expensive stores. I find perfectly good quality clothing at thrift stores. In fact, most of my favorite clothing items are thrifted. You just need to find the patience to sort through a million clothes, but I promise it is so worth it.
However or wherever you want to buy your clothes, just remember that good clothes aren’t cheap and cheap clothes aren’t good.
- Basics are your Best Friends
I loved the statement pieces in my wardrobe, from the bedazzled low-waisted jeans to funky patterned jackets, but I often found myself frequently stealing my sisters’ hoodies and plain t-shirts because I just didn’t have any.
Having a ton of statement pieces and hardly any wardrobe basics limit your outfit variety. Having the basics in your closet, like plain hoodies, zip-ups, tees, tanks, etc. makes it easier to “repeat” outfits by wearing the same items of clothing in different ways.
- If You Love it? Get it TWICE
If you found a shirt you REALLY liked, buy it in a different color. Do it with jeans, sweaters, even shoes. This really seems obvious but I hear too many people say, “I don’t need that, I have one just like it.” I say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The most important part about fashion is that it’s supposed to make you feel good about yourself, so buy that item of clothing even if you have something like it, buy two if you like one, get it in three different colors.
All this to say that rebuilding your wardrobe doesn’t have to be hard or complicated.
Put on what the best version of you would wear. Fashion is always the most fun when you’re dressing for yourself and not for others.
